The Visitor

In August, this beautiful bird appeared here in North Jersey.   He spent a few weeks in our little park, stalking fish in the shallow waters of Verona Lake.  It was almost exotic to have this type of bird here, compared to the standard ducks and geese that usually inhabit the waters.  Every time I went walking, I would look for him (I don’t know why I assume the bird is a he!) knowing that one day this bird would be heading south. 

Well, the day has come and I feel silly admitting this, but I miss that bird!!  I feel a bit like Tony Soprano in the episode where he had the ducks living in his swimming pool.  Those ducks made him happy just by being there.  He didn’t care if they shit all over his pool… but fall came and they flew away.

It’s not the best photograph, but it makes me happy.  Maybe he’ll be back next summer…
